Today’s US employment report is the most constructive macro development for gold this week. For the first time since Monday’s collapse, price, Treasury yields, the dollar and Fed expectations are moving together in gold’s favour.
45% Bearish
Before payrolls, spot gold was approximately $4,182 and still down more than 2% for the week.
Payroll growth was materially weaker than expected, unemployment increased to 4.2%, and wage growth slowed.
However, the report should not automatically be interpreted as recession confirmation. There are still few signs of widespread layoffs, and calendar effects may have distorted the payroll figure.
The correct interpretation is: dovish for the Fed, but not yet evidence of economic collapse.
This is precisely the macro confirmation Absolute Analytics was waiting for yesterday.
December tightening is still priced at approximately 90%, so the market has not abandoned the inflation/Fed-tightening story entirely.
But the collapse in October hike expectations removes one of the largest immediate threats to gold.
DXY fell after the payroll release, reaching an intraday low around 101.71.
The dollar had been one of the primary reasons gold struggled throughout the week.
Today the desired combination finally appeared:
XAU ↑ + DXY ↓ + US10Y ↓ + Fed-Hike Odds ↓
One element remains crucial:
REAL YIELDS ↓
If real yields follow nominal yields materially lower, today’s move becomes much more important for the swing structure.
Monday’s $4,110.55 low remains the defining capitulation point, but today’s move changes the upper half of the map.
$4,200 has been reclaimed. If today’s move is genuine, that level should increasingly behave as support rather than resistance.
$4,220–4,230 was yesterday’s first confirmation resistance and has now been pushed through by futures following NFP.
The critical zone remains $4,230–4,255. A sustained spot-market hold above approximately $4,255 would materially strengthen the argument that Monday’s breakdown was capitulation rather than the beginning of a larger bearish trend.
Above $4,255, the next logical supply region is $4,280–4,300, followed by the major $4,318–4,320 swing-recovery gate.
Bull Case · Slightly Dominant
Gold establishes acceptance above $4,230–4,255 while US10Y stays below ~5.20%, DXY continues lower, October hike odds remain below 20%, and real yields begin falling.
Primary map: $4,280 → $4,300 → $4,318–4,320.
Above $4,320: $4,350 → $4,385 → $4,400–4,406.
False-Breakout Case
Gold spikes after NFP but fails to hold $4,230.
That would suggest the move was primarily event-driven short covering.
Then $4,200 → $4,175 → $4,150 becomes relevant again.
Acceptance matters more than the initial spike.
Bear Case
Gold falls back below $4,200 while Treasury yields reverse sharply upward.
Then $4,175 → $4,150 → $4,110 becomes the downside sequence.
A break below $4,110.55 invalidates the recovery thesis.
The latest verified CFTC snapshot remains September 22 and therefore does not capture Monday’s roughly 4% liquidation.
The next positioning release is especially important. If Monday flushed a substantial amount of speculative length while price subsequently recovered, the setup becomes healthier because leveraged longs fall while strategic ownership remains elevated.
The distinction remains important:
PBoC demand: BULLISH · ETF strategic ownership: BULLISH · China wholesale/jewellery: SOFT.
The institutional framework is particularly relevant today because the central tactical variable is changing.
The Fed-tightening risk that forced forecast downgrades has fallen substantially. That does not automatically validate $5,000+ forecasts, but it removes part of their largest downside risk.
Oil prices fell more than 3% as markets reassessed Middle-East supply risks.
Falling oil therefore reduces one of the inflation channels that contributed to Monday’s gold collapse.
The relevant geopolitical signal remains: watch oil and Treasury yields, not merely the war headline.
This is the largest positive change in the Absolute Analytics XAUUSD signal since Monday’s breakdown.
The weekly assessment therefore moves from 65% bearish / 35% bullish to 55% bullish / 45% bearish.
The important qualification remains: spot acceptance above $4,230–4,255 is required before upgrading the swing regime to outright bullish.
