There is no new Sunday price discovery. Friday’s verified close remains the reference. Gold enters Monday only about $30 above its capitulation low, with lower immediate Fed-hike risk but still-extreme long-term yields.
35% Bullish
Friday’s labour report was significantly softer than consensus. September payroll growth slowed to 29,000, unemployment increased to 4.2%, and earlier payroll estimates were revised lower.
Fed pricing changed dramatically during the week, but long-duration bonds did not deliver the sustained rally gold needed.
Gold needs the second variable to turn.
Friday’s close near $4,140 leaves XAUUSD only about $30 above Monday’s $4,110.55 capitulation low.
$4,130–4,140 is therefore the first support to watch when markets reopen.
A sustained break below $4,110–4,111 would establish a fresh lower low and reopen $4,095 → $4,050 → $4,000.
On the upside, $4,230–4,255 remains the defining recovery zone. Friday’s NFP-driven penetration followed by rejection actually makes this area more important.
A daily close above approximately $4,315–4,320 with falling DXY and real yields would materially change the swing assessment.
Goldman Sachs moved its expected next Fed hike from October to December after softer PCE data.
Policymakers have also leaned against another immediate hike, preferring to observe more data.
This is materially better for gold than Monday’s environment.
The US 10-year recently reached approximately 5.34%, while global long-duration yields have also risen sharply.
High real yields raise the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset.
The key Monday confirmation remains: DXY ↓ + US10Y ↓ + Real Yields ↓.
The modern gold model increasingly looks like: real rates + USD + central-bank diversification + geopolitical / fiscal hedge demand.
Friday’s CFTC release now covers positions through Tuesday, September 29, meaning the snapshot finally captures Monday’s violent selloff. Managed-money exposure has been reduced and speculative excess is being cleaned out.
That is potentially constructive for the medium-term setup even though the immediate price signal remains bearish. No fresh exact combined futures-and-options contract figure is published without a sufficiently clean primary-source extraction.
The correct China framework is:
Official-sector demand: STRONG · Investment demand: STRONG · Jewellery / wholesale demand: SOFTER.
August PCE was softer than expected, but inflation remains above target and the Fed is not declaring victory.
AI-related investment, supply constraints, geopolitical shocks and energy prices can still create additional inflation pressure.
The next CPI report is therefore likely to matter more for gold than another routine labour indicator.
Soft CPI: October hike probability could move closer to zero.
Hot CPI: Friday’s dovish payroll repricing could reverse rapidly.
Iranian financial stress intensified over the weekend. The Iranian rial hit another record low, while the central bank responded with dollar sales.
Gulf oil disruption also remains unresolved, keeping Strait of Hormuz risk relevant for Monday.
Do not trade “Iran” directly. Trade the oil + Treasury reaction to Iran.
Bear Case · Currently Dominant
Gold cannot regain $4,160–4,180.
$4,140 → $4,130 → $4,110.
A confirmed break below $4,110 opens $4,095 → $4,050 → $4,000.
If $4,000 fails while real yields rise, $3,960–3,940 becomes the next structural area.
Base / Consolidation Case
Gold holds $4,110 but repeatedly fails near $4,200.
That establishes approximately $4,110–4,200 as a post-liquidation range.
This would not necessarily be bearish. Time-based consolidation could remove speculative excess and rebuild structure.
Bull Case
Gold holds $4,130–4,140 and recovers $4,165 → $4,180 → $4,200.
Then it breaks $4,230–4,255.
After Friday’s false move, intraday penetration is not enough. Sustained acceptance is required.
With DXY ↓ + US10Y ↓ + real yields ↓ + Fed tightening expectations ↓, $4,280 → $4,300 → $4,315–4,320 becomes credible.
There is no new gold session today, so the price structure has not changed.
Saturday: 65% Bearish / 35% Bullish
Sunday: 65% Bearish / 35% Bullish
The directional score stays unchanged because the evidence has not materially changed.
