Institutional Morning Brief | 24 September 2026
OPENING BIAS: Gap-down expected; judge the defence, not the gap.
GLOBAL RISK
US 10Y surged to ~5.1%, the highest since 2007, while crude rebounded above $100 before easing in Asia. GIFT Nifty was ~23,261, down ~189 points. USDINR is ~95.73. Transmission: yields↑ + oil↑ is the adverse India combination; INR >96 would confirm external stress.
INDIA / FLOWS
Wednesday Nifty recovered ~0.5% to 23,447; Bank Nifty ~56,549 (+0.6%). FII cash flipped to +₹1,617cr and DII +₹2,341cr — ~₹3,958cr combined institutional demand. Breadth improved: Midcap100 +0.70%, Smallcap100 +0.89%. This was a genuine repair, but today's adverse global shock must now be absorbed.
MICROSTRUCTURE
Nifty: 23,500 max Call OI 1.02cr; 23,000 max Put OI 1.26cr. Crucially, 23,400 Put writing added 54.83L, and PCR improved from 0.94 to 1.03. Today's map: 23,300 immediate defence; 23,100–23,000 structural support; 23,500–23,600 acceptance/supply zone.
Bank Nifty: 56,303/56,205 support; 56,619/56,717 resistance. 56,500 Calls unwound yesterday, while Put writing appeared at 56,600/56,500 — constructive only if Bank Nifty reclaims VWAP after the gap.
TODAY'S CATALYST BOARD
1 | US yields ~5.1% — highest-impact risk; persistence can revive FII selling and pressure valuation multiples.
2 | Brent / Iran — India needs Brent↓ + INR<96 for macro relief to persist.
3 | Trump–Xi — trade truce extended to Jan 10; today's summit covers tariffs, AI, critical minerals and Iran. Positive trade outcomes favour global cyclicals/tech risk appetite; disappointment can strengthen USD/rates pressure.
4 | NSE listing — NSE debuts on BSE today after a ₹22,562cr OFS, 5.71x subscribed (QIB 12.68x). Treat NSE's move as stock-specific unless market-infrastructure/broker stocks and breadth confirm it is spreading.
5 | Primary-market supply — Moneyview's ₹1,092cr IPO opens today; track whether continuing issuance suppresses secondary-market breadth/liquidity.
WHAT CHANGED
Yesterday: FII cash SELL → BUY; breadth↑; Bank Nifty participated; 23,400 Put support strengthened; VIX fell to 10.34.
Overnight: US10Y↑ sharply + crude volatility↑ + GIFT gap-down.
Conclusion: yesterday improved the structure; today tests whether it is real institutional absorption or only a relief session.
TRADEABLE EVIDENCE
Higher-confidence long-breakout environment only if: Nifty defends 23,300 → reclaims VWAP; 23,300/23,400 Put OI holds/rebuilds; Bank Nifty reclaims VWAP and 56,500–56,600; breadth recovers >60–65%; USDINR stays <96. A green Nifty driven by a few heavyweights without bank/equal-weight participation = HEAVYWEIGHT DISTORTION, not accumulation.
AA RESEARCH
Build a Gap Shock Absorption Score: GIFT gap → first-15m VWAP retention → breadth → Bank relative strength → futures OI → Put-wall persistence → INR/oil. Also measure Support Migration Persistence: Put OI created in an easy session is less valuable than Put OI defended under an adverse overnight shock.
ONE SIGNAL TO WATCH
23,300 NIFTY × BANK NIFTY VWAP × ₹96 USDINR
Hold/reclaim + Put defence + bank/breadth confirmation = institutional absorption and better A+ breakout capital conditions.
Break 23,300 + Put unwinding + banks below VWAP + INR >96 = downgrade toward RISK-OFF / FOREIGN DISTRIBUTION.
